The blackFoot is a full-sheet capable 3-axis CNC router kit from BuildYourCNC with a 48" x 96" cutting area. The kit ships disassembled and excludes the table, computer, spindle cooling system, and tooling — all of which had to be sourced and built independently.
Build Process
The first step was fabricating a 5'x10' table with a perfectly flat, level surface. Adjustable leveling feet were engineered into the legs to compensate for floor irregularities — a critical requirement since any twist or bow in the table transfers directly to the machine's cut accuracy.
With the table complete, the gantry was assembled following the kit's 140-step instruction sequence. The X-axis uses dual ANSI #25 roller chains running the full length of the table, driven by a single stepper motor through a rigid coupling and cross-shaft to keep both gantry sides synchronized. The Y and Z axes use roller chain and lead screw drive respectively, with anti-backlash nuts on the Z axis for accuracy.
Electronics were mounted on a dedicated plywood panel on the wall adjacent to the machine — keeping high-voltage wiring organized and accessible. Stepper motor drivers, power supply, and the CNC breakout board were wired and configured for all three axes.
The 2.2kW water-cooled spindle was installed on the Z-axis carriage and connected to a closed-loop water cooling system with a reservoir, pump, and tubing routed to keep coolant away from the work area.
Limit switches were installed on all axes for homing and safety, preventing overtravel and providing a repeatable machine coordinate origin.
The machine was commissioned with test cuts after axis tuning and squaring, verifying repeatability and motion accuracy across the full cutting envelope.
