RepRapPro Mendel 3D Printer Build
The RepRapPro Mendel is an open-source FDM 3D printer built from a parts kit — part of the RepRap self-replicating machine lineage where many of the printed structural components are produced by another printer. This build required sourcing several components independently and fabricating or assembling everything from bare parts. Controller Board The Sanguinololu controller board arrived unassembled and required full through-hole soldering — stepper motor drivers, voltage regulators, capacitors, connectors, and the ATmega644P microcontroller socket. Careful soldering technique was required to avoid cold joints on the motor driver pads, which carry significant current during operation. Frame Assembly The frame uses smooth steel rods as both structural members and linear motion guides. Rods were cut to precise lengths and the vertical members installed plumb — any deviation from vertical propagates into print geometry errors. The triangulated Mendel frame was assembled and squared before any motion components were added. Motion System and Heated Bed The Y-axis rolling heated bed was assembled on its rod pair with LM8UU linear bearings and a PCB heated bed for print adhesion and warping prevention. The X-axis carriage carrying the extruder was assembled on the cross bar with the filament feeder and hot end mounted and aligned. Wiring All wiring was custom fabricated — no pre-made harness was included. Stepper motor cables, thermistor leads, heated bed power wiring, endstop switches, and hot end heater cartridge wiring were all routed, terminated, and bundled into a clean harness connected to the Sanguinololu board. Custom Fan Shrouds After the printer was operational, thermal management issues with the stepper motors and printed parts were addressed by designing custom fan shrouds in SolidWorks. The shrouds were printed on the Mendel itself and installed to direct airflow over the stepper drivers and onto newly printed objects for faster layer cooling and improved print quality.
